Como reprimenda, sus superiores le envían a la escuela más remota del mundo, una aldea glacial del Himalaya llamada Lunana. Tras un agotador viaje, Ugyen llega a Lunana, donde se encuentra sin electricidad ni calefacción, en una escuela sin ventanas ni pizarra. Aunque pobres, los aldeanos dan una cálida bienvenida a su nuevo maestro, pero él se enfrenta a la abrumadora tarea de enseñar a los niños del pueblo sin ningún material. Desesperado, quiere abandonar y marcharse cuanto antes, pero poco a poco, se ve conquistado por la sencillez, bondad y ganas de aprender de los pequeños y sus familias.
